Best Food for Senior Dogs

Best Food for Senior Dogs

Our canine companions are likely to find their dietary requirements and taste changing as they age. Today, our Murfreesboro vets address questions about geriatric care, and what the best dog food is for older dogs.

At what age is my older dog considered geriatric or elderly?

Since every dog is unique, we cannot provide a one size fits all answer to this question. A dog's expected lifespan can vary depending on size and breed. As a general rule of thumb, small dogs can be expected to live between 15 and 20 years, while larger dogs usually live from around 12 to 15 years.

Larger dogs typically age faster and are considered to be "older" around the time they turn 6, while small dogs generally pass into middle age at around 8 years old.

Does my senior dog have special nutritional needs?

We recommend considering two major criteria when looking for the best dog food for senior dogs.

Number one is to try to keep it low in calories. Similar to people, a dog's metabolism will slow down as they age. It's important to keep our furry friends from chowing down too ferociously to prevent obesity.

Number two: Include high-fiber options in their diet. Constipation is a fairly common issue for aging dogs, can be painful and may lead to further gastrointestinal problems if it becomes severe enough. Maintaining your older pup's gastrointestinal health should be high priority, so the best dog food for older dogs will have lots of fiber to help keep them regular and healthy.

Which health issues will the best dog food for senior dogs help prevent?

If your senior dog suffers from health conditions such as liver disease, diabetes or kidney failure, he or she will likely need a special diet to help manage the condition. It's best to consult with your vet about your dog's diet if they are ill and you are concerned about any potential impacts of their diet.

Dogs who are at higher risk for heart disease (or who already have it) will benefit from lower-calorie senior dog food to help keep their weight down; low-sodium recipes are preferable.

Our veterinarians in Murfreesboro recommend owners of pre-diabetic or diabetic dogs choose dog food that slows the absorption of food. These special diabetic diets tend to raise blood sugar more slowly and reduce the risk of health complications in dogs with diabetes. These diets are also low-fat and exceptionally high in fiber. We recommend speaking to your vet, who can provide dietary recommendations for your diabetic or senior dog.

You'll also find higher quality protein sources in many senior dog foods than standard dog food. This helps senior dogs maintain a healthy body weight without putting unnecessary strain on their aging kidneys.

As we mentioned previously, since older dogs commonly struggle with constipation, the higher the amount of fiber, the better. This will help to prevent constipation and keep their bowels functioning regularly.

What should I do if my senior dog won't eat their dog food?

It is relatively normal for older dogs to have some loss of appetite. Causes for sudden appetite loss are hugely carried both in scope and severity; your dog could be suffering from simple nausea brought on by gastrointestinal problems, or they could be suffering from the effects of cancer.

If your senior dog has suddenly begun to demonstrate an unexplained loss of appetite, it is best to speak with your vet and have them rule out any potentially serious causes including dental disease, diabetes, kidney disease, or cancer.

Once serious medical conditions have been ruled out as the cause for appetite loss, another avenue for consideration is the simplest one--perhaps your dog is simply tired of their regular food. Adding chicken broth, some water, or a small amount of canned food to your dog's dry kibble supply may serve to make it more enticing. You could also try preparing a simple meal for your dog of cooked chicken and barley or cooked lamb and rice. These home-cooked meals are both nutritious, and bland enough to sit well with them if your older dog is experiencing some nausea.

Is prescription dog food the best dog food for older dogs?

That depends on the exact situation for your dog. In some cases, yes, the best option for your senior dog may be a medical prescription dog food. In other cases, simply switching to a healthy alternative
