Heartworm Prevention
Our Heartworm Policy
We recommend that all dogs be on heartworm prevention year-round. WHY?
- This protocol is the recommendation of AAHA and the American Heartworm Society.
- The heartworm prevention manufacturers only back their product when prevention is given year-round.
- Heartworm prevention controls many intestinal parasites, some of which are transmissible .to you.and your family. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends deworming your pets at least.four times per year.
- It is extremely difficult to determine exactly when during the year mosquitoes are inactive.
- Many dogs travel to warmer climates where mosquitoes are active year-round. (Middle TN is arguably one of these areas)

We recommend yearly heartworm testing. WHY?
- Heartworm prevention manufacturers only back their product when the dog is tested yearly.
- Yearly testing provides your dog with a safety net in case a dose is missed during the year. (ex.vomiting, hiding the tablet under the couch, or forgetting to give the medication)
- The heartworm test used by our clinic also screens your dog for Lyme's Disease and Erlichiosis, two debilitating diseases transmitted by ticks.
Heartworm disease is 100% preventable when the products are given correctly. Both Merial and Novartis back their products completely when they are given according to the label. See our receptionists for more information about these guarantees.
At Brogli, Lane, and Weaver Animal Hospital, the health of your pet is our number one concern. Heartworm disease is far easier to prevent than it is to treat.

For your convenience, we can mail your heartworm prevention directly to your home. Contact our office for more information about this service.
